@Anodean: Unfortunately for my reputation as an educated sort of dolt, the line actually comes from 'The Winter's Tale' and the bear is pursuing Antigonus- which similarity to 'Andronicus', I suppose, accounts for my memory being as blurry as either Shakespeare's audience or the above photos. Mea culpa.

@Paradox: Ah, the pleasure and privilege of associating with educated people. I had no idea - my usual state of things, I know - that this was Shakespeare and not just some old Burlesque chestnut. Goes to show that a good gag never dies... :D

Ah yes, ‘Titus Andronicus’; proof Shakespeare could write a bad play. All the same, one wonders how that scene could have been staged without turning it into unintentional comedy- though perhaps by that point in the drama the audience would have drunken themselves as blurry as these photos…
