@anodean: There are certainly numerous barmy old codgers scattered through British film and literature that would fit the bill. Sort of a UK version of "Uncle Teddy" from Arsenic and Old Lace, eh? What a great place! One expects an elderly retired British Army officer in antique regimental uniform, whose unvarying routine requires careful inspection of the surrounds via telescopes before setting off a single cannon blast every day at 2:00pm – just to be sure – followed by gin and tonic in the den.

You could stage a full-sized game of Clue here.

I'm gonna place my bet on those telescopes being used to watch for incoming agents of the UK Historic Building Preservation Trust. Twice in the first 3 sentences of the listing description this home is described as "listed" and the Historic Trust is known for becoming seriously unhappy when listed properties are interfered with. I have to wonder if they'd decommission the attic MI6 adjunct office if they learned about it. Not for it being MI6, but for it not being period to the house. Thank goodness they never got wind of Bletchley Park or Britain might have been done for by the time we joined WWII. Given one can avoid detection (by Nazis and the Trust), this would be quite the merry flat in which to dwell. Lovely interiors in lovely condition and a simply enormous "garden" (their term for yard) along with it. Located south of one of the most exciting cities in the world, yet conveniently not located in it (it's one of the most congested as well), this is a real gem.

Great somewhat eccentric house.

An easy explanation for the telescopes could be because the owner has upgraded their telescopes over the years without getting rid of the older ones. Maybe a starter telescope from the parents turned into a lifetime interest and the owners kept them all out of nostalgia.

The command center could be an old set from Doctor Who.

And those aren’t the only two telescopes in the house. How… odd. I would not think that the lights of London would be conducive for astronomy. Perhaps Wilf lives here.

Otherwise, it’s a fabulous old house.
