Back when people might rely on a clean spring for their drinking water, it was good practice to build a little shelter over the spot where it issued from the rock – at its headwaters – to ensure cleanliness of the water taken from it there. It’s a short step to imagine elaborating on the structure as a retreat for quiet reflection, perhaps allowing the spring to form a little fountain inside of it before flowing out.

@Emerald63: We’ve gone to salt water in our little pool. It’s not that it gets very salty, but the salt is converted somewhat. It seems to be as effective as straight chlorine and has the added benefit of making your skin soft. It’s a heckuva lot cheaper too. I imagine I’m on your side of the financial situation and every little bit helps keep us in the black at the end of the month. I doubt Ron Howard did it because of the cost benefit. He probably just likes soft skin too.
